The Good Life Inventory
The manuscript for The Happy Lawyer was finished, I was ready to send it off the production team, and it didn’t actually mention the Good Life Inventory yet.
Luckily for me, a week before I’d delivered the Happy Lawyer Signature Talk at a firm, and again someone asked: “what’s next?” The answer (from the bird’s eye view) is pretty clear - the answer is:
Reflect
Take a step
Do it all again
However, people seemed to have problems figuring out what that specifically means for them.
I get it now. It hadn’t occured to me because I’d found the reflection fairly easy - but of course I would, I have years of journaling, therapy, and coaching (both receiving and providing) behind me. But not everyone has that experience. And a lot of people need and/or want help figuring out what their next step is. There’s no shame in that. It’s to be applauded. 🙌
So at the very last minute, I put something into the manuscript about the Good Life Inventory. I hadn’t created it at the time, and I didn’t even know what it would look like yet. But I trusted that I would be able to come up with something helpful. And I believe that I did.
Two different methods came up - a quiz (quantitative) and long form reflection (qualitative). My vision was that someone would do the quiz and then sit down with a pen and tackle the long form questions. But you don’t need to do that, you can pick whichever of the two (or whatever order) you prefer:
Quantitative
The quiz has 32 questions spread out across all the different facets of the Happy Lawyer Model. At the end, it’ll provide you a rating for each element of the model. You can chose the lowest rated section and figure out what you want to do about it. Or not.
Pick your highest rated section and get started there. What I care most is that you get started. Once you’re taking Intentional Action, you’re in the Cycle, and you’ve got it from there.

Qualitative
I’ve always loved long-form questions. If you can sit down with a pen, get yourself in the zone, and let yourself write without judgment, it’s amazing what you can discover.
There are questions for each element of the model designed to help you see where your next opportunity is.
